In the early 1950's when I was a young boy, me and my friends used to ride around the sidings at Andover station in the steam engines with the drivers, I had quite a rapport with them. Often they would 'smuggle' me onto the footplate and take me to Southampton Terminus station. When there I had to hide in a blanket so not to be seen by the Station Master before making the return trip home.

There is just something about steam trains that is so evocative and it's no surprise they are hugely loved. I remember my father telling me how as a 14 year old in the 30's, he'd be selling the Southern Evening Echo on Southampton station watching the Lord Nelson, Schools and other Southern locos and not wanting to go home to bed because the whole atmosphere was so wonderful.

Although I'm no railway buff...I don't record the numbers or really know the classes of engines...I still get that excitement when I see....or smell steam, and if I have my camera with me I'll take a photograph.

I do like your website.... the internet is such a good medium for the enthusiast.

Hi, I was at Crewe Station on Saturday 30th April and remember seeing all three of you, Kay taking photos, and your little boy was lovely he knew the liveries of the trains so well, and it was also nice to see a female taking such a good interest in the railways. A very good site by the way too. I do a lot of travelling around the country taking photos of trains, hope to see you around.

When we step off the train at The Hard in Portsmouth, I always feel like a child again going on holiday by train, as soon as you get off the train there you are hit with the fabulous smell of the seaside and just across the water you can see all the great old boats in the 'Historic Dockyard'. They're brill!

My memorable journey was taking an overnight sleeper to West Berlin, trundling slowly across Germany in the 1980s before the fall of the Berlin Wall. It was in an old fashioned sliding door compartment where the seats folded down flat at night. The train stopped everywhere but the journey was worth the wait.

A ride on the Japanese Shinkansen (Bullet Train), so fast, and yet, so smooth.

The wonder ride along the Devon coastline from Exeter to Paignton. Such a beautiful, scenic excursion for young and old. LOVELY! lovely! Thanks we enjoyed it last year.

My memories of steam trains go back nearly 50 years. My Dad took us every night to Overton station to see the trains, one from Basingstoke another from Andover. They went flashing past, with their smoke puffing. When the driver saw us on the railway bridge he often sounded a HELLO. They passed at 7:15, I was a little scared because the first thing we saw were lights on the front of the engine, it drew nearer and nearer until 'whoosh', under the bridge and out of sight.

I have really enjoyed perusing your site, in fact, it has made me realise just how fond I am of the railways and what a big part of my life they have been ! As a girl I used to travel from my home in Weybridge to Wadebridge in Cornwall for holidays by train as I had an aunt living there. En route, the train would stop at several stations where I also had aunts living! In those days, trains would spend quite a lot of time at each station, enough time for me to catch up with various aunts on platforms of Axminster and Exeter St David's ! Railways were a great way of keeping in touch! Keep up the good work and thank you for keeping the spirit of the railways alive for future generations of travellers!

I love the site as a whole but I especially enjoyed reading the first three instalments of your "Railways Past and Present" section. They are written so beautifully and are accurate to the facts. I can't wait for the final three to be completed. Keep up the great work.

I have watched the Mark Collins programme 'Trainspotting' and found it very interesting. I started my career on the railway at Eastleigh in 1969 as Messenger Boy in the Station Managers office. When I reached 18, I applied for a Guard's position. I spent many years travelling around the network, having route knowledge from Weymouth to London, as far north as Banbury, covering many north London routes to Ripple Lane in Essex. I worked 'Steam Specials', including the 'Orient Express' to Bath. I wanted to work the Royal train, but never made it. However, I did take the breakdown train out on a number of occasions. I have travelled around the country photographing and collecting unit and loco numbers.
