 Structure of the Rails

There are in excess of 40,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and over 7,000 level crossings across the UK rail network and therefore they play a massive and crucial role in the infrastructure of the railways. Our rails boast a vast variety of types of all these and we have endeavoured to capture many of our favourites to share with you on our site. From road, rail and foot bridges to tunnels beneath hills & water. Viaducts constitute a majestic feature of our country's landscape; the epitomy of the splendour of Victorian engineering. Level crossings, in their various guises, play a vital role when rails, roads & footpaths cross and the safety and smooth-running of the entire rail network depends wholly on the existence and efficiency of signals, points and the signal-boxes controlling them. Enjoy our celebration of these remarkable and vital railway features!
